Marmolada Elopement & Wedding Photographer

The Queen of the Dolomites & Italy's Highest Glacier

In brief

At 3,343 metres, Marmolada is the highest peak in the Dolomites and holds the range's largest glacier — a cable car from Malga Ciapela climbs to Punta Rocca at 3,265m in around twelve minutes, trading a mountain hike for one of the most dramatic viewpoints in the Alps.

The cable car climbs in three stages — Malga Ciapela to Coston d'Antermoja (2,350m), on to Serauta (2,950m), and finally Punta Rocca (3,265m) — putting couples at the edge of Italy's largest glacier within roughly twelve minutes of leaving the valley floor. It's the fastest, most dramatic altitude change of any location we shoot.

Because the summit station sits above 3,000 metres, conditions change quickly and can include far stronger wind and cold than the valley forecast suggests, even in July. We build a wider weather-alternate window into every Marmolada booking than we would at a lower location, and confirm cable car operation on the morning of the session rather than assuming it.

The summit terrace also houses a small museum dedicated to the mountain's First World War history, alongside panoramic views that, on a clear day, extend across a meaningful share of the wider Dolomites range. This is one of our elopement package locations, best paired with a base in Cortina d'Ampezzo or Alta Badia given the drive to Malga Ciapela.

Planning notes

  • Dress for winter conditions regardless of the season in the valley — temperatures at 3,265m routinely sit well below freezing outside summer, and wind chill adds to that even in July and August.
  • Cable car schedules and weather closures are checked the morning of your session; we always hold a lower-altitude backup location in reserve for this specific booking.
  • The glacier itself is a protected, actively monitored environment — sessions stay on the maintained viewing terraces rather than the glacier surface itself.
  • Live cable car status and opening times are published directly by the Marmolada cable car operator — the most reliable source the morning of a booking.

What couples say

“We had exactly ninety minutes of good light and a boat to ourselves. Our photographer had a shot list for the weather we actually got, not the one we'd hoped for. The photos still make our families cry.”
Sarah & Mark — Lago di Braies
“We eloped with two witnesses and a drone permit we didn't know we needed until the team sorted it. Everything about the day felt handled.”
Emily & Chen — Val di Funes

Frequently asked questions

Do we need hiking experience for Marmolada?

No — the cable car reaches the 3,265m summit station directly, with no hiking required. The challenge here is altitude and weather, not physical difficulty.

What happens if the cable car can't run due to weather?

We confirm operation the morning of your session and hold a lower-altitude backup location in reserve, since high-altitude weather at Marmolada is more variable than at our road-accessible locations.

Is Marmolada colder than your other locations?

Yes, meaningfully — at 3,265m it's the highest point in our portfolio, and temperatures and wind chill are noticeably more extreme than at Seceda or Passo Giau even in peak summer.
